Before the stillness,
there was noise.
Before the path,
there was wandering.
Like the young Siddhartha,
I moved through desire, identity, certainty and doubt,
believing each would answer the question I could not yet name.
Nothing was missing.
Yet nothing felt complete.
This piece remembers that season
when the mind was crowded,
the heart was restless,
and the light had not yet been seen.
Not darkness.
Just a man searching for a way home.
Before the Bodhi Tree
Artist Statement
Before enlightenment, there is searching.
This work draws inspiration from the early life of Siddhartha Gautama, the years before awakening, when questions existed long before answers. The fragmented forms, restless lines, and competing colours represent a mind moving through desire, identity, uncertainty, and transformation.
Rather than depicting darkness, the piece explores the human condition of wandering. A state familiar to many of us before discovering a path, purpose, or way of seeing.
