THE CROSSING OF ANOMA
From Fragments of a Sakya with a White Horse
The night he left Kapilavastu, Siddhartha did not leave alone.
His horse carried him beyond the walls of the world he had known.
His attendant followed him into the darkness.
At the banks of the Anoma River, the journey changed.
The ornaments were removed.
The hair was cut.
The prince disappeared.
What remained was a seeker with a robe, a bowl, and a question larger than any kingdom.
The stories say that his horse and attendant wept at the parting.
Not because a king was being lost,
but because something familiar was ending.
This painting is not about renunciation.
It is about the river every life eventually reaches.
The place where certainty must be left behind.
Where love cannot follow in the same form.
Where the old self stands on one shore,
and the unknown waits on the other.
The horse bows.
The attendant grieves.
The river keeps flowing.
And Siddhartha walks forward.

About The Work
The Crossing of Anoma depicts one of the most profound moments in the Buddha's life, the point at which Prince Siddhartha crossed the Anoma River and stepped away from royalty, inheritance, status and identity.
In traditional accounts, his faithful horse Kanthaka and attendant Channa accompany him to the edge of this transformation. What appears to be a farewell between three companions becomes something much larger: a farewell between a man and the life he has always known.
The horse symbolizes devotion.
The attendant symbolizes attachment.
The river symbolizes transition.
At the center stands Siddhartha carrying only a robe and bowl, stripped of the symbols of power that once defined him.
This work is part of an ongoing visual exploration of Buddhist memory, Tamil Buddhist histories, pilgrimage, ancestry and personal transformation. Rather than illustrating the historical event literally, the painting presents it as a fragmented emotional landscape—where grief, courage, love and uncertainty exist simultaneously.
