FRAGMENTS OF A SAKYA WITH A WHITE HORSE - 02
There’s a story of Siddhartha before he became the Buddha.
About being surrounded by pleasure,
music,
beauty,
desire
and still feeling somewhere else internally.
This piece comes from that feeling.
Not rejection.
Not purity.
Not hatred towards pleasure.
Just the strange distance between the body and the mind sometimes.
A feeling I’ve known in my own life too.

About The Work
Desire Couldn't Hold Him draws inspiration from a recurring moment found in Buddhist tradition: the young Siddhartha surrounded by every pleasure the palace could offer, yet feeling an absence that comfort could not fill.
Before his renunciation, music, luxury, companionship and sensual pleasures were placed before him as proofs of a life worth keeping. Yet the future Buddha remained restless. His attention drifted beyond enjoyment toward questions that neither wealth nor desire could answer.
This work does not portray desire as an enemy.
Instead, it explores a quieter experience, the moment when the body occupies one place while the mind searches elsewhere.
The fragmented forms and contrasting colors reflect that inner division. Desire appears throughout the composition, but never as a complete image. Shapes emerge and dissolve. Attractions appear and disappear. Nothing fully settles into certainty.
The work also carries a personal dimension. It emerged from reflections on moments when external experiences felt vivid and present while the mind remained distant, occupied by questions that existed beyond the immediate moment.
Part of Fragments of a Sakya with a White Horse, this painting continues an exploration of Buddhist memory, longing, pilgrimage, identity and transformation through abstract visual language rather than literal historical representation.
