FRAGMENTS OF A SAKYA WITH A WHITE HORSE -04
As a child, I climbed these hills with devotion before I understood anything about history.
The pilgrimage felt older than explanation.
Older than language.
Older than the stories I was later taught to repeat.
Years later, while searching through Buddhism, memory, and erased histories, I began seeing Sabarimala differently.
Not as a broken faith
but as a place carrying layers beneath layers.
This painting came from that feeling.
The child who walked toward the light
and the man trying to understand what that light once meant
exist together inside this work.
To me, this is not just a pilgrimage route.
It feels like an ancestral memory surviving through ritual, landscape, fire, and footsteps.

About The Work
Makara Vilakku emerges from a personal relationship with Sabarimala that stretches across childhood, memory and historical inquiry.
Long before questions of religion, identity or history entered the picture, there was simply the journey.
The climb through forest paths.
The collective movement of thousands of pilgrims.
The anticipation of light appearing against the darkness of the hills.
For many, the pilgrimage is an act of devotion.
For the artist, it also became a point of investigation.
Years later, while exploring Buddhist histories, forgotten traditions and the ways cultures transform over time, Sabarimala began to reveal itself as a landscape layered with multiple memories. Myth, ritual, geography and history appeared less as separate things and more as overlapping traces of human experience.
This work does not attempt to provide answers.
Instead, it inhabits the space between faith and curiosity.
Between inherited belief and historical exploration.
Between the child who climbed the mountain seeking a sacred light and the adult who continues searching for the stories that may lie beneath it.
Rendered through abstraction, the painting transforms pilgrimage into memory itself—a landscape where devotion, ancestry, loss, wonder and questioning coexist.
The light remains.
Its meaning continues to unfold.
